  • Academic Schedules

    • The academic schedules of the KNPU start in early March and end in February next year.

      Academic sessions are divided into regular sessions, during which students take courses with credits and seasonal sessions when students take courses without credits and receive field training at police stations.The first and second semesters of the regular session are 16 weeks each, 32 weeks in total for a year.Seasonal sessions are 3 weeks during the summer and 4 weeks during the winter.

    • The curriculum of the KNPU is designed to learn all the necessary majors and basic subjects for a bachelor’s degree in law and public administration and for becoming a police executive, and moreover acquire the various skills required for an educated person In the modern society, having the student to earn a total of 174 credits in four years.

  • Assessment

    • Overview

      The evaluation of the courses is based on the mid-term exams, final exams, and frequent assessments, each accounting for 40%, 40%, and 20% of the total grade, while relative evaluation would be conducted unless notified otherwise. In the case of the relative grades, the top 10~30% of students would receive As, the next 30~50% of students would receive Bs, while grades of C or lower would be given in the range of 20~40%.

      Mid-term exams are conducted in the middle of the semester to evaluate what the students have learned depending on the course situation.
      Final exams would be conducted at the end of the semester before/after courses finish to evaluate what the students have learned in overall and would be based on written examinations.
      Frequent assessment refers to the comprehensive evaluation of students' attitudes, understanding, presentation abilities, and submission of assignments. In each course, students who have received grades over D- would be considered to have passed it, while those with an F would be considered to have failed the course. When a student has failed to take the mid-term or the final exams, a supplemental examination would be conducted, and students who have received an F would take a make-up examination for the course.

    • Supplemental Examination

      Supplemental exams would be conducted for students who have failed to take mid-term or final examinations for inevitable reasons based on the University Regulation 24. The highest grade students can receive is B- according to the principles and if the student has failed to take the exam for inevitable public matters, he or she can receive the grade of A- at most.

    • Make-up Examination

      According to the University regulation 25, make-up exams would be conducted for students who have received a grade of F, and those who have passed the exam would receive a grade of D- at most. Make-up exams are to be held during seasonal sessions or vacations, and although students can apply for make-up exams twice, those who have received an F for the two examinations or have received a grade of F in more than two courses would be expelled.

Basic subjects are preliminaries for major subjects

The course provides the basics for Law, Public Administration, and Police Science and students are required to take the course from their freshman year to the second semester of their junior year.The students are required to earn a total of 54 credits, and while students of the Law Department are required to earn 24 credits from Law courses and 10 credits from Public Administration courses, students of the Public Administration Department are required to earn 20 credits from Law courses and 14 credits from Public Administration courses, and students of the Police Science Department are required to earn 20 credits each from Law courses and Public Administration courses.

      Law courses consist of Constitutional LawⅠ, Administrative Law, General Principles of Criminal Law, Particulars of Criminal LawⅠ, Particulars of Criminal LawⅡ, Criminal ProcedureⅠ, Criminal ProcedureⅡ, General Principles of Civil Law, and Principles of Commercial Law.

    • Public Administration Course

      Public Administration Courses consist of Management of Organization, Public Personnel Administration, Public Financial Administration, Policy Analysis, and Introduction to Criminal Law.

    • Police Science Course

      Police Science course consists of Police Affairs, Police Life and Safety, Introduction to Criminal Investigation, Theory of Police Traffic, Police Security, Police Information, National Safety Police, Foreign Affairs Studies, and Psychology of Crime.

  • Public Administration Department
    • Law Course

      Law courses consist of Constitutional LawⅠ, Administrative Law, General Principles of Criminal Law, Particulars of Criminal LawⅠ, Criminal ProcedureⅠ, General Principles of Civil Law, and Principles of Commercial Law.

    • Public Administration Course

very student should earn 27 credits(9 credits from mandatory courses and 18 credits from optional courses) from Liberal Arts courses.

The Liberal Arts courses are composed of general liberal arts courses, which help students to cultivate leadership personality as university students, and foreign language courses, which would establish a foundation for students playing a leading role in the globalized modern society.

  • Mandatory Liberal Arts Courses

    Mandatory Liberal Arts courses consist of Korean History, Public Ethics and Humanism, English and Culture, and Communication Skills.

  • Optional Liberal Arts Courses

    Optional Liberal Arts courses consist of 21 lectures such as English Speech, Athletics, Second Foreign Language, and Cultural History, among which students would make choices.

Other subjects of the undergraduate curriculum

Consist of foreign language skills and IT skills, driving, shooting, and volunteering necessary for adapting to the globalized society.

  • Foreign Language

    Freshmen are required to take the English and Culture courses, and those who have fulfilled the standards can choose to take the course as an optional Liberal Art course during one’s sophomore, junior, or senior year.

  • IT Skill

    Students are intensively educated on IT skills during the seasonal sessions of their freshmen year, and should acquire at least one of the following certificates; Internet Information Administrator Level-2 or higher, Computer Specialist in Spreadsheet & Database Level-2 or higher, one or more Microsoft Office Specialist(MOS) Expert certification and MOS certification each.

  • Driving

    Students would be educated on driving during the winter semester of their junior year and should acquire Driver’s License Level 1(Regular) after applying to the examination conducted at a Driver’s License Examination Office.

  • Volunteering Work

    To practice the spirit of volunteer police and to cultivate diverse emotions through voluntary activities, students should complete volunteering work of 18 hours or more per semester, and a total of 144 hours or more within 4 years in various fields such as social welfare centers, farming and fishing areas, or on campus.

  • During seasonal sessions, students complete police field training at police stations and take courses without credits such as various practical training courses and Special Lectures on Policing.

    Seasonal sessions include summer terms and winter terms, and during the 3-week-long summer term before the summer vacation freshmen take driving, computer, and foreign language courses while sophomores·juniors·seniors participate in Police Field Training, and during the 4-week-long winter term after the winter vacation freshmen take shooting courses and Special Lectures on Liberal Arts, while sophomores·juniors take shooting courses, Special Lectures on Policing, and Special Lectures on Liberal Arts. Seniors participate in Basic Military Training during the winter term, and during the period, female students can take special lectures if they apply to do so.

    • Foreign Language Skill

      The foreign language education consists of English educations and the second foreign language educations, which are mainly conducted during summer and winter terms of freshman year.Courses on TOEIC, TEPS, and special lectures on the second foreign language are provided, which aim for balanced improvement by supplementing studies during regular sessions that focus on reading and grammar.

    • Police Field Training

      Police field training is usually conducted in the summer term and is composed of Traffic for sophomores, Public Safety for juniors, and Crime Investigation for seniors. During the training period, students can have the opportunity to experience police work at police stations, combine the experience with the theories they have learned through Police Science, and develop a sense of novice police executives.Other than the Field Training worth 2 credits that are assigned to, students participate in various practical training programs provided by institutions related to crime policies such as the Korean National Police Agency, Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, police offices, police precincts(boxes), courts, and prisons.Through different police practice training programs, students acquire the requirements as police officers.

      • A. Driving

        Freshmen take driving courses for 1.5~2 weeks for acquiring the Driver’s License Level 1(Regular). Driving courses are conducted by academies specialized in Driver‘s License in the form of commissioned education.

      • B. Shooting

        Students take shooting courses during winter terms in their sophomore·junior·senior year through which they practice shooting with a 38mm handgun and learn the necessary information for police enforcement such as rapid-fire, slow-fire, and safety regulations for shooting.Students should get 70 points or above when shooting 10 rounds of slow-fire and 20 rounds of rapid-fire at a distance of 15 yards with a 38mm handgun.

      • C. Computer Practical Training (IT Skills)

        During summer and winter terms, students choose to take courses on basic computer programs such as Hangul Office, Excel, PowerPoint, or Photoshop, and in-depth courses would be provided for those who excel.
